Good to know

Know the minimum daily order count

Small shops often track monthly revenue without knowing the daily order count needed to survive. Turning break-even into daily orders makes it easier to see if the day is behind and whether to push preorders, ads or bundles.

Material rate and order value are levers

Reducing break-even orders is not only about rent or staffing. Raising average order value, reducing waste, controlling material cost and lowering platform fees all raise contribution margin. Cake shops can pair this with the cake cost calculator.

Include software and owner pay

Ordering systems, POS, payment tools, accounting software and the owner's own labor are real costs. If they are left out, the shop may look break-even while still not paying the owner properly.

Small-shop break-even checks

High revenue does not automatically mean safety. You need to know whether each order, after materials, fees and waste, can cover fixed costs.

List fixed costs completely

Rent, payroll, utilities, gas, insurance, depreciation, software, ads and inventory all affect break-even. Missing one cost makes the daily order target look easier than it is.

Use contribution margin per order

A NT$1,000 order does not leave NT$1,000. After materials, payment fees, platform fees, discounts and spoilage, the remaining amount is what covers fixed costs.

Owner pay is still a cost

Small shops often exclude the owner's own labor, making the shop look profitable while hiding wages. If the owner works full-time, include a reasonable salary in fixed costs.

Manage by daily orders

Monthly revenue targets are abstract. Converting break-even into daily orders makes it easier to plan preorders, ads, pickup windows, staff schedules and promotions.

FAQ

What is break-even?

Break-even means revenue minus variable costs is just enough to cover fixed costs such as rent, payroll and utilities. Only orders beyond that point create operating profit.

Why is revenue alone misleading?

Two shops with the same revenue can keep very different amounts after materials, fees, discounts and spoilage. Break-even depends on contribution margin per order, not just total sales.

Is this useful for cake shops?

Yes. Cake shops can include material cost, ordering-platform fees, payment fees, packaging waste and seasonal discounts, then estimate daily order targets.
