Good to know

When you'll reach for a QR code

Shops print one QR code for the menu, a delivery link, their official chat account or a payment page and stick it on the table or counter — customers scan and they're there. Business cards, posters, packaging and sign-up forms use them too, removing the 'type the URL by hand' step between the physical and digital worlds. For a small business it's a near-zero-cost digital touchpoint.

Static vs dynamic codes

This tool makes a 'static' QR code: the URL is encoded directly into the pattern, so it never expires and there's no monthly fee — it works as long as the link exists. Commercial 'dynamic' codes add a redirect layer so you can change the destination later or count scans, but they require a subscription. For most shops a static code on a stable link is enough.

Print it so it actually scans

Err on the larger side. A common rule is one-tenth of the scanning distance — to scan from a metre away, make it about 10 cm. Always leave a white margin (the quiet zone), and download a high-resolution PNG so it stays sharp when enlarged. Before printing in bulk, scan it with two or three phones first. You can shrink the final artwork with our image compressor before handing it off.

QR code field checklist

A useful QR code is not just generated; it has to scan reliably in print and keep pointing to the right place later.

Wi-Fi QR is for guest networks

Shops, studios and rentals can turn guest Wi-Fi into a QR code so visitors join by scanning. Use it for guest networks, not your internal company network or router admin password.

  • Special characters in SSID and password are escaped into the standard Wi-Fi QR format.
  • Use the no-password option for open networks so phones do not misread it.

Choose static or dynamic first

This tool creates static QR codes: the content is written into the image, with no subscription and no expiry. If the URL changes, the printed image must be replaced. Use a dynamic QR service only when you need scan analytics or editable destinations.

Test before printing

Before printing in volume, scan it with an iPhone, an Android phone and an older phone, then test low light, glossy material and the real scanning distance.

  • Leave a quiet white margin around the code.
  • Keep foreground/background contrast high; dark code on white is the most reliable.

Size follows distance

Table cards, menus and business cards usually work around 3-5 cm; posters and signs need more. The farther people scan from, the larger the QR code should be.
