Good to know

Price from cost, not a guess

Custom cake sellers often price by ingredient cost times a rough multiplier. A steadier method is to include ingredients, labor, packaging, waste, overhead and platform fees, then back into a price from your target margin. After that, compare against market prices and customer willingness to pay.

Labor time must count

Prep, baking, cooling, filling, frosting, decorating, packing, photography and messages all cost time. If a dessert studio excludes the owner's hours, more orders can mean a lower real hourly wage. Pair this with the bakery capacity planner to check both price and volume.

Fees should not be deducted at the end

If customers pay through an ordering system, card, ATM or third-party processor, include those fees in the formula upfront. Otherwise a target margin can disappear after settlement. For pickup dates and order status, compare dedicated bakery ordering platforms.

Cake pricing checklist

Cake pricing should not be ingredients multiplied by a guess. Custom communication, labor, waste, packaging, platform fees and seasonal capacity all affect profit.

Use actual ingredient quantities

Cream, eggs, flour, fruit and chocolate are often bought in bulk, while one cake uses only part of the pack. Purchase cost divided by purchase quantity, multiplied by used quantity, gives a much better cost base.

Your labor is not free

Prep, baking, cooling, assembly, frosting, decoration, photography and customer messages all take time. Even solo studios should set an hourly wage, or busy seasons can turn into low-paid overtime.

Back platform and payment fees into price

If you use an ecommerce platform, credit-card payments, third-party payment tools or delivery services, fees should be priced in upfront instead of deducted after the fact.

Seasonal campaigns need separate estimates

Mother's Day, strawberry season, Christmas and gift boxes may bring volume, but also extra staff, overtime, waste and packaging. Estimate regular products and campaign products separately.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the product name and batch quantity.
  2. 2Add ingredient purchase cost, purchase quantity and used quantity row by row.
  3. 3Add labor time, target hourly wage, packaging, overhead and waste rate.
  4. 4Set platform/payment fee and target net margin to see break-even and suggested prices.

FAQ

What costs should a cake price include?

At minimum: ingredients, labor, packaging, overhead, waste and platform/payment fees. Ingredient-only pricing often underestimates custom cake work because communication and production time matter.

How is the suggested price calculated?

The tool computes base cost, then backs into a price that leaves room for platform/payment fees and your target net margin. In simple terms: price = cost ÷ (1 − fee rate − target margin).

Can I use this for seasonal cake campaigns?

Yes. Run separate estimates for strawberry season, Mother's Day, gift boxes or custom cakes, and adjust batch quantity to see whether batch production reduces cost per cake.
